A print of “Snow Storm: Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth” by J. M. W. Turner on your wall
A whirl of white, grey and brownish smoke from which only a paddle wheel and a mast emerge - this Turner painting of 1842 looks as if it had been painted yesterday. A print of Snow Storm works in a modern study, in a loft living room with concrete and steel, and in a hotel restaurant, where it acts as an expressive, almost abstract composition. The neutral palette goes well with black, chrome and raw wood. We recommend a horizontal crop in a proportion close to the original, from 100 cm wide, so that the swirl of paint reads from a distance. On Dibond the matt surface emphasises the texture of the brushstrokes, while 5 mm acrylic glass adds the wet sheen of a storm to the scene. Snow Storm: Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth
About the artwork
A steamboat barely looms in the middle of a vortex of snow, smoke, waves and light, which Turner arranged into a spiral that draws the eye to the centre of the canvas. The painting was shown at the Royal Academy in 1842 with a long title stating that the ship Ariel was signalling in shallow water and that the author had himself lived through the storm. Critics wrote of "soapsuds and whitewash"; today the work is regarded as one of the boldest in Turner's output, anticipating abstract painting. It belongs to Tate Britain in London.
