A print of “Nihonbashi: Morning View” by Utagawa Hiroshige on your wall
Every journey has its beginning - for Hiroshige it was Nihonbashi bridge at dawn. This scene that opens the famous Tokaido series is a perfect choice for a hallway, study or office, where it symbolically welcomes and sends you on your way. A print of Nihonbashi: Morning View combines the pinkish sky of morning with earthy browns and greys that suit vintage, rustic and Japandi interiors with plenty of wood. The horizontal composition looks best in a wide crop above a desk or sofa, and as panoramic wallpaper it draws you into the bustle of old Edo. Hiroshige wall art that every lover of Japan and history will appreciate. The Japanese woodblock print looks subtle and refined on Dibond and gains vividness on 5 mm acrylic glass. Nihonbashi: Morning View
About the artwork
At dawn a daimyō's procession with banners and spears crosses the arched Nihonbashi bridge in Edo, while in the foreground fishmongers carry baskets of the morning catch. The bridge was the starting point of the Tokaido road, which linked Edo with Kyoto. The woodblock print opens the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published around 1833-1834, which brought Hiroshige fame. The series established the image of travel as an aesthetic experience and consolidated the position of landscape in ukiyo-e art.
