A print of “Nichiren in the Snow at Tsukahara on Sado Island” by Utagawa Kuniyoshi on your wall
Winter silence, falling snow and a lone figure laboriously climbing uphill - this scene works like a meditation hung on the wall. Utagawa Kuniyoshi subordinated the picture to greys, white and deep indigo, so the Japanese woodblock print combines wonderfully with architectural concrete, graphite fabrics and a raw industrial style. A print of Nichiren in the Snow at Tsukahara is well-chosen wall art for a study, library or minimalist living room, where it is a reminder of perseverance. The horizontal crop lends itself well to a panorama above a sofa, and wallpaper in a huge format carries the winter landscape across an entire bedroom wall. Dibond emphasises the graphic character of the line, 5 mm acrylic glass adds depth to the snowflakes, and eco-friendly Dispa board is the choice for those who value natural materials. About the artwork
This sheet from Utagawa Kuniyoshi's series devoted to the life of the monk Nichiren, founder of one of the main schools of Japanese Buddhism, was made around 1835-1836. It shows the exile wading uphill through deep snow on Sado Island, to which he was banished in 1271. White flakes of snow against a grey sky and the small figure among the drifts build a mood of solitude and steadfastness. The impression is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is among Kuniyoshi's most moving landscapes.
