A print of “The Wave” by Gustave Courbet on your wall
A heavy, green-brown mass of water freezes just before it strikes, and the thick layer of paint almost comes off the canvas. Courbet's The Wave is a painting for interiors with character: a study with dark furniture, a loft with brick, a seaside hotel room or a tasting room where the decor is meant to carry weight. The muted greens, greys and brown suit black metal, smoked oak and concrete floors. We recommend a horizontal format in a proportion of about 4:3, from 120 cm wide, so that the texture of the palette knife remains visible from afar. A print of The Wave on Dibond keeps the matt, mineral gravity of the original, while on 5 mm acrylic glass the water takes on a wet, glassy sheen. You can order Courbet wall art in any dimension in the artMonte configurator - you give the size, we cut the crop and print exactly for your wall.

The Wave
About the artwork
A single wave rises to the full height of the frame and breaks on a stony beach, while heavy storm clouds hang above it. Gustave Courbet painted waves at Étretat in Normandy in the summer of 1869, applying the paint with a palette knife so thickly that the water takes on physical mass. The Berlin version is one of the largest in the series. Cézanne said that this wave hits the viewer in the chest and makes him step back. The painting is in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
