About the artwork
At the junction of new, wide streets near the Gare Saint-Lazare, passers-by under umbrellas cross paths on the wet cobbles, and in the background rise the uniform apartment buildings of the Paris rebuilt by Haussmann. Caillebotte showed the monumental canvas at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877. The precise drawing, cool grey and almost photographic framing set it apart from the work of his colleagues, and the painting itself became one of the most important portraits of the modern nineteenth-century metropolis.
