Vilhelm Hammershøi

Danish painter, master of hushed, almost monochrome interiors of Copenhagen flats, often with the figure of his wife Ida seen from behind. His sparing, light-filled compositions are today regarded as one of the most important phenomena in Scandinavian painting at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
