A print of “Aristide Bruant in His Cabaret” by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec on your wall
A black hat, a red scarf and a nonchalant silhouette - Aristide Bruant as seen by Toulouse-Lautrec is a vintage poster you recognise from the other end of the room. A print of Aristide Bruant in His Cabaret brings the spirit of Parisian Montmartre into an interior: it works as wall art for a loft-style living room, for a study with dark wood, and as a retro poster for a bar or a home wine corner. Strong black, red and warm beige pair well with brick, concrete and brass. The Toulouse-Lautrec print looks best in a vertical crop, but holds its own superbly in a large format above a sofa too. Printing on Dibond gives a matt, gallery-like depth, 5 mm acrylic glass boosts the saturation of the colours, and wallpaper turns an entire wall into a cabaret bill. About the artwork
The colour lithograph of 1893 shows the famous Parisian chansonnier Aristide Bruant from behind, in a wide black hat, a cape and a red scarf. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec reduced the figure to a few flat areas of colour and a strong outline, drawing on Japanese woodblock prints. The poster advertised Bruant's performances at his cabaret on Montmartre. It is among the artist's boldest compositions and part of the canon that made the poster a fully fledged art form.
