Icy blue, the navy of night and the white of peaks that seem to glow with their own light - Sohlberg's Winter Night in the Mountains carries the silence of a Norwegian winter into a home. About the artwork
The snow-covered peaks of the Rondane massif shine a bluish white beneath a navy sky with a single star, while dark, frozen trees in the foreground close off the view like a frame. Sohlberg saw this motif on a winter skiing trip at the turn of 1899 and 1900 and returned to it for more than a decade in drawings and successive versions. The great canvas of 1914, today in the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, was chosen by Norwegians in 1995 as their national painting.
